Coorg Coffee: A Taste of the Western Ghats

Coorg, a picturesque district located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, India, is renowned for its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and, most notably, its rich coffee plantations. Often referred to as the “Coffee Capital of India,” Coorg is celebrated for producing some of the finest Arabica and Robusta coffee beans in the country. The region’s unique geographical and climatic conditions contribute to the distinct flavor profile and quality of its coffee, making it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.

Aromata Coffee Plantation is a serene oasis that promises a unique blend of nature and premium coffee. Located just 10 kilometers from Tadiandamol, the highest peak in Coorg at an impressive elevation of 1,750 meters (5,740 feet) above sea level, Aromata offers an unparalleled experience for coffee enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The Geography and Climate

Coorg’s elevation, ranging from 900 to 1,800 meters above sea level, along with its well-distributed rainfall and fertile soil, creates an ideal environment for coffee cultivation. The region experiences a tropical climate, with a monsoon season that provides the necessary moisture for coffee plants to thrive. The misty hills and cool temperatures not only enhance the growth of coffee but also contribute to the complexity of flavors found in the beans.

Coffee Cultivation

The coffee cultivation process in Coorg is steeped in tradition and involves a combination of modern agricultural practices and age-old methods. Many plantations are family-owned and have been passed down through generations, preserving the artisanal approach to coffee farming. The coffee cherries are handpicked at the right stage of ripeness, ensuring that only the best beans are selected for processing. Once harvested, the cherries undergo various processing methods, including wet and dry processing, which further influence the flavor profile of the coffee. The beans are then sun-dried and roasted to perfection, ready to be brewed into a delightful cup of coffee.

Coffee Varietals

The two primary types of coffee grown in Coorg are Arabica and Robusta. Arabica beans are known for their mild flavor, acidity, and aromatic qualities, while Robusta beans are typically stronger and more bitter, with higher caffeine content. The coffee from Coorg is often characterized by its smoothness, rich aroma, and a hint of chocolate and spice, making it a delightful experience for coffee drinkers.

Cultural Significance

In Coorg, coffee is not just an agricultural product; it is an integral part of the local culture and lifestyle. The coffee estates are often surrounded by beautiful landscapes, attracting tourists and coffee lovers from around the world. Many plantations offer guided tours and tastings, providing visitors with insights into the coffee-making process, from seed to cup. Additionally, Coorg’s coffee is often served in traditional homes, where it is brewed using a special filter coffee pot called a “decoction pot.” The result is a strong, aromatic coffee served with milk and sugar, embodying the warmth and hospitality of the Coorgi people.

Coffee Journey

Grow

Depending on the variety, the coffee plant can take between 3 to 5 years to produce fruit. This fruit, referred to as the ‘coffee cherry,’ contains two coffee seeds.

Pick

The coffee cherry transitions from green to a rich red. Only the fully ripe, red cherries are harvested by skilled pickers. All of our coffees are collected using the selective picking method.

process

After the cherries are harvested, they undergo various processing methods. Some coffee is subjected to intense drying in natural sunlight for 7 to 10 days, while other coffee cherries are processed through a method called pulping. In this process, the beans are washed, the outer layer of the coffee bean is removed, and then they are dried until they reach the ideal level of dryness.

roast

After roasters receive our coffee, they skillfully roast it to unveil the rich, hidden flavors contained within the small bean

Products
